Over My Dead Body
When young widow Elvira Kennedy and her 3-year-old daughter are fatally injured in a car crash, a stranger appears at Elvira’s bedside in Intensive Care, claiming to be her new boyfriend. He insists that she wanted to donate her organs.
Her mother, Carole, is shocked by this revelation. How can she agree to donation knowing what she knows: a secret the family have kept hidden for over thirty years? If it emerges it could shatter all their lives.
The hospital needs the parents’ authority to proceed. A specialist nurse and the chaplain sense something sinister, but professional etiquette dictates that they tread warily. Carole herself struggles with the guilt of opposing Elvira’s dying wish and the fear of betrayal, but is eventually persuaded by the boyfriend to sign the forms.
Later, as she receives letters from the patients whose lives Elvira has saved, Carole finds comfort in her grief. The barriers between donor and recipient are carefully preserved, protecting their anonymity, and she begins to relax.
But then, mysterious flowers appear on the grave, a painful letter arrives from a publisher, a young man who received Elvira’s kidney sends a poem, and a budding journalist sees a chance for fame. Those safeguards start to crumble, with potentially devastating consequences.
